Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve: Conservation Efforts Hit by Tragic Loss

The Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan recently faced a setback in its reintroduction efforts with the death of a tigress and the disappearance of one of her cubs. These events have slowed down plans aimed at strengthening the reserve’s tiger population.

About Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve

  • Fourth Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan: It is the 52nd tiger reserve in India and the fourth in Rajasthan, located in the Bundi district in the southeastern part of the state.

  • Ecological Significance: The reserve features both Vindhyan and Aravalli ecosystems, supporting diverse flora and fauna.

Connectivity and Landscape

Ramgarh Vishdhari forms an essential part of the tiger corridor in Rajasthan:

  • Connected to Ranthambore and Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserves through buffer zones.

  • Mez River, a tributary of the Chambal River, flows through the reserve, adding to the ecological richness of the landscape.

Flora and Fauna

  • Tree Species: Includes Dhok, Khair, and Amaltas.

  • Animal Species: Home to tigers, panthers, sloth bears, and other wildlife.

Conservation Challenges

The unfortunate death of a tigress and the disappearance of her cub pose significant challenges to the reintroduction efforts aimed at boosting tiger numbers in the reserve. Ensuring effective monitoring and mitigating human-wildlife conflicts will be critical for future conservation initiatives.
