Emphasis on Open Channels: China Urges Exchanges, Identifies Taiwan as Key Risk.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Beijing, marking the first visit by a Secretary of State in five years. In talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, both sides emphasized the need for open channels of communication, discussed responsible management of the US-China relationship, and highlighted the importance of diplomacy. Agreements were reached on encouraging exchanges and increasing mutual visits. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that high-level interactions would be maintained and Mr. Blinken extended an invitation to the Chinese Foreign Minister to visit the US.
Taiwan Question
Amid strained ties, the Chinese Foreign Ministry asserts the significance of Taiwan as the most crucial and risky issue in China-US relations. Although no breakthrough is anticipated on key issues, Blinken's visit is seen as a positive step. A potential meeting between Blinken and President Xi Jinping might set the stage for a future meeting between President Biden and Xi, possibly at the G-20 Summit in September.
